Algonquin Reflections
Algonquin Park, Ontario. Not every photograph comes from a planned expedition. Some of the best ones come from surprises along the way.
I was hiking to a different destination when I passed this pond and stopped. In early fall, the reflection of the sky in the water was unexpected. Something about the light on the water caught my attention.
I set down my pack and spent time exploring the pond's edges, looking for the angle that made the most of what was there. This version works because of the balance: the reflected sky occupying just enough of the frame, the beginning hints of fall colour along the shore, the sense of depth created by the far treeline.
The surprise in photography is often better than the plan. When you're specifically looking for something, you can miss what's actually there. But when you're open to what presents itself, you find images you never would have imagined.
This pond wasn't on my list for the day. I didn't know it existed until I walked past it. The photograph has become one of my favourites from that trip — a reminder to stay open to what might be around the next bend.
Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. The matte finish preserves the light and the mood. For those who know that the best discoveries are often unplanned.
