Gros Morne Western Brook Pond

from $275.00

Gros Morne, Newfoundland and Labrador. They call it a pond, but Western Brook Pond is a fjord in everything but name — a glacier-carved land-locked fjord flanked by cliffs almost 2,000 feet high, fed by waterfalls that plunge from the plateau above. The cliffs are composed of billion-year-old rock.

Getting there requires a hike across a coastal plain, boardwalks keeping your feet dry as the mountains rise ahead. Then you reach the shore and the scale hits you. The cliffs tower overhead. The water stretches back between them, impossibly deep, impossibly clear. You're looking at some of the oldest exposed rock on Earth.

I photographed Western Brook Pond from a boat, trying to capture the vertical scale. The cliffs reflected in the still water, creating a symmetry that emphasized their height.

Boat tours take visitors deeper into the fjord, between the cliffs and past the waterfalls. I made the trip and was glad I did. And this image captures the anticipation, the moment when we rounded a point, the landscape opens up and you realize what you're looking at.

Doesn't get any better than that.

Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Matte finish suits the tones and atmosphere. For those who appreciate landscapes that convey the scale of geological time.
